The CDC’s Influenza Surveillance Report
The weekly influenza surveillance report prepared by the Influenza Division of the Center for Disease Control shows a surge in influenza cases that has infected between 33 and 34 million people and hospitalized 430,000 people with 19,000 deaths since October 2024. (Note that Week 7, ending February 15th is the latest data available at the time of this publication.)
Pregnant women are at higher risk of severe influenza disease, which can lead to hospitalization or even death. The flu vaccine is the best protection for both the mother and baby. Studies show that getting the flu vaccine during pregnancy reduces the risk of hospitalization by about 40%. Vaccinating during pregnancy also helps protect newborns, as they rely on flu-fighting antibodies from their mothers to fight the flu until they can get their own flu shot at 6 months old.
